Ok, the obvious answer is get a job, lol, but it seems the returns from crafting are non-existant at low level so what is a good way to get money before you hit lvl 80? I want to get into crafting but have had little time as of late to resource hunt and I was looking at one of the posts about buying mats but it takes several gold. Also, I've noticed selling dropped weapons and armor in game don't seem to turn over much profit.

Economy is very tightly controlled in Guild Wars 2. Having 10 gold is comparable to having 100g in other games. Are there ways to game the system? Yes, but ArenaNet usually clamps down on those quickly, mostly because they have a Gems to Gold conversion system and want to keep it under tight control.

one thing you might not have seen, if you do the dailies. You get laurels, and for just a couple of those you can buy starter kits for each craft. Might be something to look into if you want to craft.

I didn't want to scam the system by any means, I just wanted to know if there was a viable way to make money. And Thanks Iz, I didnt even know the laurel thing existed. I'll have to check that out when I get in game tonight. I havent really looked into the daily system yet.

If you are the kind of person who has the patience for near-endless dungeon running, dungeons are usually a great way to get gold as well as level. From getting my guardian from 35 to 80 just running AC, I got around 40-50 gold. If you run CoF (level 75 explorable) or higher level ones, you can salvage the rares you get from the tokens for ectos and sell those for even more moolah.

This game actually allows you to live on little money and still do everything. Doing map completion always helped me have the basic money I needed. I never had issues having money for a character that just did map clearing including all the 3g 10s you spend on the three manuals you buy for your traits. I even had the money to buy a few crafting components if I was short for crafting my own gear. One way to gain some cash in the higher end of levels is doing the world bosses to get their loot chests. You always get at least one yellow you can sell on the TP from each. The L60ish stuff sells for around 15 to 18 silver, once you hit 80 it averages 20 to 25ish, as per the last couple of weeks of doing them two or three times a week. You can do each once per day per character. Frostmaw in Wayfarers Foothills and the Fire Elemental in Metrica Province are the ones I wind up hitting the most. How not to make money? Don't bet with the cattlepult testing Charr in Diessa. LOL! I actually gained a gold off him in one round and lost all my winnings the next. The guy is wiley. I was lucky to break even at the end.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

It's pretty obvious that the economy is leashed to push players into buying gems/gold for scratching any "jonsin" type itch. Personally, I farm materials and gear and sell them as a general policy, with gem purchases being used to drive major level upgrades and level cap weaponry if the cost to buy is less than the cost of marketplace purchase (frequently, it is of late). I find that striation of player made items has happened far quicker than expected. Already, no one really wants anything other than "master" or better in the leveling process, while gouging on the high end items (a short sighted activity, at best) ensures gem/gold purchases as things are otherwise so inflated in price as to be silly. Once upon a time (i.e., EQ, WoW, etc) I used to play the market and bottom farm for profit. These days, I haven't the time to do so. You may wish to check into it; that said, it looks like there are a number of players already doing this and cornering/manipulating the marketplace for their own profit, so you'll have to be really good at it to make anything.

If it ain't fixed, break it until it is.

Volkoth, Unfortunately, crafting in this game is not a viable way to make gold; in fact, its a really good way to waste it. It is a tool to use if you want to level a character quickly, and have some materials or gold to burn. While yes, you could potentially use it to craft level 80 rares to salvage for ecto, you're really not making much more (if any) than you would if you just sold the mats directly. As for AC runs, that used to work really well before they refreshed the dungeon. Now, I don't think its worth it. The best way to make consistant gold currently is to either farm the Dragon chests using any number of timers available online (super boring in my opinion), or farm a few select dungeon paths. Some things to note here: * They removed the diminishing returns (DR) for running dungeons quickly. You still hit DR for running the same path on the same character per day, but thats it now, no more account level DR as far as I'm aware. This means you could run your dungeon path of choice as many times as you have characters capable of doing them, for full rewards, once per day. For example, I have 8 level 80s, so I could run CoF 1 8 times in a row without experiencing ANY DR. * Some dungeon paths are obviously better choices than others. My suggestion is to try them all, and decide which you enjoy most, or which you find to be the easiest/fastest. * Try to run with the same people as often as you can. Establishing group synergy is absolutely key in completing ANY dungeon content smoothly and efficiently. * Add me to your friends list in game. I am always looking to run quick dungeon paths, and lately I have been spending more time combing my friends list for a group than actually dungeoning! I've decided that until Alliance Chat is implemented, the best way for me to get into contact with others who want to run is by checking my 'Followers' list. So, anyone who wants to get a whispered invitation to come plow through a dungeon, go ahead and /friend me : ) (My account info is in the header)

I'll add you too, Ralcore. Always enjoyed running dungeons with you, I'm rather particular about who I group with, so I can feel comfortable in dungeons. @Volkoth: sorry, I did not mean to infer that you wanted to game the system, I was just simply stating a matter of fact. Its intentionally hard to gain gold, so what you're experiencing is pretty much normal for everyone. Well, except for those who do game the system. ;)

Dungeons are my preferred way for raising capital. Even with the 'revamped' Ascalonian Catacombs, it isn't too bad with a competent group. Also, get the Omnomberry Bars and use them right before the last boss fight for additional gains. On top of that, if you have enough laurels, get one with a utility slot and add the +20% gold upgrade (Gilded Infusion). Finally, you can have 6 superior runes of scavenging for another +15% gold find. With all 3, you have +75% gold, which on a boss from any dungeon, means a lot of return, and with a good farming group, you'll have many gold at your fingertips. Plus the added bonus of having all those dungeon tokens to exchange for armor. AC is one of the few places you can get an exotic set with Power/Toughness/Vitality, which is an all-around good combo for PvE (I have a set for Warrior and Guardian). Or you can choose the Precision/Power/Condition damage for more offensive builds.

Crafting is as Ralcore stated, mostly useful to gear yourself up, which can be cheaper off the tradepost too, and for easy levels (capping each tradeskill nets about 10 levels). Either run dungeons as stated or stare at the tradepost all day. Figure out the fluctuations and buy stuff when it's low and sell when it's high. Crafting materials are always in flux as the bots get levelled up, flood the market and then get banned....prices drop until a mass bot ban, then the skyrocket. Avoid obvious items like Ecto's for the buy low sell high tactic, those are tightly watched and monitored. Find a niche market, materials that are used alot but not in high supply. I make all my money off the tradepost. I even made my own seperate mini-guild for storage of goods while waiting for prices to bounce up. I never actually craft anything....
